ROBERT V. PHILLIPS focuses his practice on catastrophic motor vehicle/18-wheeler collisions, cycling accident/injuries, medical malpractice, bad faith insurance litigation and civil rights claims, also referred to as U.S.C. 1983 claims. Mr. Phillips has tried to verdict numerous medical malpractice, auto/trucking and insurance cases in South Carolina and North Carolina and in both State and Federal Courts.
He has obtained numerous verdicts and settlements in excess of $1 Million. Recently he has obtained jury verdicts of $8 Million in a negligent security/night club beating case, $1.025 Million for the family of a pedestrian killed by an SUV collision (Read about case in Lawyer's Weekly). It should be noted that the Defendant's insurance carrier had only offered $10,000 prior to trial. In a separate 18-wheeler / trucking case, Mr. Phillips obtained a settlement of the eve of trial for $1.7 Million. This case had been previously refused by a very prominent Carolina law firm due to their belief that the case was too complicated.
He has also been very successful in reforming a large number of UIM/UM policies up to the liability limits resulting from the insurance agent's failure to make a meaningful offer of UIM/UM coverage. These cases occur when an individual becomes catastrophically injured and their insurance policy was inadequately explained and offered to the insured pursuant to South Carolina State Law.
In 2006 Mr. Phillips was elected by his fellow lawyers to serve on the Board of Governors for the South Carolina Association for Justice (formerly SCTLA). In his capacity on the Board, Mr. Phillips works with State legislators to ensure that South Carolina citizens maintain their rights afforded to them under the State Constitution and Code of Laws.
Mr. Phillips was born in Huntsville, Alabama where he grew up playing junior tennis and ice hockey. After becoming one of the top junior tennis players in the United States he attended Clemson University on a tennis scholarship. Following his junior year, he turned professional and competed on the ATP Tour (professional tennis tour). While on tour he attained a ranking in the top 250 players in the world and won the Dutch National Team Championships with the 1996 Wimbledon Champion Richard Krajicek. For five years he was also the team captain and number one player for a professional team in the French Premier Division.
After retiring from the tour, Robert returned to Clemson University where he completed his undergraduate studies. He then went back to France and attended the Université Catholique de Lille where he studied business for a year and then returned home to South Carolina and attended law school at USC.
When not practicing law, Robert spends his time snow skiing, playing in semi-professional tennis tournaments, competing in triathlons and playing with his German shepherd dog, Heidi. In addition to currently representing North Carolina for the Southern Cup Tennis Championships, Mr. Phillips in the past year completed two 70.3 Ironman Triathlons. He is currently training for the Florida 140.6 Ironman. He is single and lives in the Charlotte, NC area.
